So you’re shooting a new LinkedIn photo or need to refresh your dating profile pic? Whether you are joining us for our 2021 Fall Headshot Event or will get one another time this year, here’s some tips from our photographer (and Vice President) Allison Kelley!

Wardrobe:

Stay true to your personality — Wear something you feel great in and allow your personality to shine through.

Solid colors are always safe — Try finding colors that contrast your skin tone or colors that make you feel great. Navy blue, black, gray, and red are a pretty typical professional palette to choose from if you’re feeling stumped!

Avoid fine patterns — Small polka dots and horizontal stripes can be distracting and hard to translate on camera. If you’re feeling bold and want to go for a pattern, keep it to a minimum and layer something solid on top.

Avoid white tops — White can be tricky to photograph. If you’re wanting to wear a white shirt, try layering a blazer or cardigan over it.

Make sure your shirt is wrinkle free! — Pro tip: throw your shirt in the dryer with an ice cube for 10-15 minutes to get those tricky wrinkles out before your photoshoot. Wrinkles are distracting and difficult to edit in post production.

Go for layers! — A blazer or cardigan over a blouse is always a safe, professional option.

Bring options — You can always make the final decision when you get there!

Makeup:

Avoid shimmery products when doing your makeup. That includes highlighter!

Lean more towards matte skin — We all love that dewy glow, but it can look sweaty on camera. Pat on a layer of powder to avoid shine in photos, especially in that pesky T-zone!

Wear a lip color — Choose a strong red or nice neutral, it doesn’t matter. You’ll want some color! Blush is never a bad idea either.

Pro tip — You may need to wear a little more makeup than usual to transfer on camera. Lighting equipment and flashes can wash out color. Don’t be scared of the extra layer of mascara!

Poses:

Think about the feeling you want to convey through your headshot. Are you quirky and fun? Are you more serious and professional? Your headshot does not need to be the typical “arms crossed, forced smile” pose! Allie will be sure to direct you so your photos look relaxed and candid.
