Fresh snow, hot chocolate, spending time with friends and family, endless amounts of good food… there’s so much to look forward to this holiday season. Why not add the office holiday party to that list?
Trust me, I know these events can be stressful with the combination of adult beverages, coworkers, and endless small talk. But, they don’t have to be.
Based on my experience, here are some dos and don’ts for surviving AND thriving at your office holiday party.
1. DO be positive — anybody could be listening.
Keep a positive attitude and don’t complain about anything work-related. You never know who could be secretly eavesdropping behind you.
2. DON’T drink too much — you’re still at work.
Look, I enjoy a good cocktail as much as the next young person, but there’s a fine line to draw here. Typically, you get one or two free drinks at the party, so try to limit it to just that. You don’t want to be the person all your coworkers are talking about the next day.
3. DO participate. If there’s a gift exchange, do it!
Usually the cost for the gift exchange is pretty minimal. And, you may end up chatting with someone you haven’t talked to before in the process.
4. DON’T show up early, but don’t roll up a half hour late either.
I know, I know, not very specific. As a newbie, it’s always awkward to be the first person to arrive. Then again, you don’t want to show up after dinner has started either. Plan ahead to get there during the “sweet spot.” For me, this is in the middle of the usual 30 minute cocktail time at the beginning of the party.
5. DO dress to impress.
This one may be obvious, but it’s important. Don’t show up looking like a slob. As I mentioned above, this party is still work and you never know who could be paying attention to your wardrobe.
6. DON’T go at it alone — bring a friend (if you can) or SO as a little extra buffer.
If it’s allowed and you’re feeling nervous about the party, bring a friend or your significant other. It’s a good buffer and built-in excuse to end a conversation you don’t feel comfortable with. “Excuse me, I need to go check on so-and-so for just a minute…”
7. Last but not least — RELAX!
Don’t stress out too much – these events are supposed to be a fun way to get to know coworkers. Be your sparkling self, mingle with everyone, stay positive, and you’ll definitely thrive at your office party this year!
